Sarah-Jane Lewis
British mezzo-soprano Sarah-Jane Lewis is establishing herself as a compelling interpreter of dramatic repertoire with a voice defined by depth, power and dramatic intensity.
In 2024, she was awarded Second Prize at the New York Wagner Competition, marking a significant step in her transition into the dramatic mezzo fach and confirming her growing reputation in Wagnerian repertoire.
She trained at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music before completing her studies at the National Opera Studio. She then went on to become a Link Artist at the Royal Opera House and a Jerwood Young Artist at Glyndebourne Festival Opera.
She has appeared with English National Opera in Porgy and Bess, part of the Olivier Award-winning production, alongside performances in a wide range of repertoire spanning Purcell, Verdi, Puccini, Strauss, and Wagner.
Following an earlier career performing soprano repertoire, Lewis has now undertaken a fach transition to mezzo-soprano. Her current repertoire centres on the great dramatic roles of Verdi, Bizet, Saint-Saëns, and Wagner, where her vocal weight and dramatic presence find their natural home.
Her repertoire includes Eboli (Don Carlo), Amneris (Aida), Carmen (Carmen), Dalila (Samson et Dalila), and the Principessa (Suor Angelica) alongside a developing focus on Wagner roles including Erda and Waltraute.
